Department Introduction

  Department Introduction:

The Urology and Andrology Clinical Group of CITIC Xiangya Reproductive and Genetic Specialized Hospital currently has 10 physicians, including 2 senior physicians (Director Lin Ge and Professor Jiang Desong), 4 associate senior physicians (Hu Liang, Zhou Shunxing, Zhang Huan, and Zhong Changgao), and 4 intermediate-level physicians (Zhao Xingguo, Nie Hongchuan, Li Huanzhu, and Lu Yichang). Our andrology department mainly uses advanced technologies such as drug therapy, surgical treatment, and assisted reproductive technologies (IVF and artificial insemination) to assess male infertility and treat oligospermia, asthenospermia, teratospermia, and azoospermia. The andrology department has an annual outpatient volume of 45,000 and performs 1,000 outpatient surgeries and over 150 microsurgical procedures annually.

Our Urology Department (Andrology) has established a relatively complete microsurgical treatment system for andrology, including epididymal aspiration, testicular sperm extraction, microsurgical varicocelectomy, microsurgical epididymovasostomy, microsurgical vasovasostomy, and microsurgical testicular sperm extraction. In 2018, at the 4th China Sex and Reproduction Conference, our andrology department was awarded the "Top Ten Andrology (Reproductive) Brand Departments in China" honor.

  Main Services:

Urology (Andrology) Outpatient Clinic: We offer year-round, holiday-free infertility andrology outpatient services, providing male infertility assessments and personalized treatment for oligospermia, asthenospermia, teratospermia, and azoospermia.

Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (micro-TESE): This is suitable for patients with azoospermia who cannot obtain sperm through conventional epididymal aspiration or testicular sperm extraction. The magnification of the microscope provides a higher sperm retrieval rate than conventional testicular biopsies while avoiding damage to testicular tissue that could lead to decreased gonadal function. It can be divided into asynchronous micro-TESE, where the male undergoes micro-TESE first, the sperm is found, and then cryopreserved for a small quantity or as single sperm, waiting to be thawed and used for IVF treatment on the day of the female's egg retrieval; and synchronous micro-TESE where the female's egg retrieval and male's sperm retrieval are performed on the same day. Currently, the average sperm retrieval rate for micro-TESE is approximately 40%, with higher success rates in patients with a history of orchitis, cryptorchidism, Klinefelter syndrome, or Y chromosome microdeletion.

Microsurgical Varicocelectomy: This is suitable for patients with normal female fertility whose male partner has abnormal sperm quality or chronic, recurrent scrotal pain due to varicocele that is unresponsive to medication.

Microsurgical Vasovasostomy: This is suitable for patients with normal female fertility and male partners who previously underwent vasectomy and wish to have children again. The surgical patency rate can reach 80%.

Microsurgical Epididymovasostomy: This is suitable for patients with normal female fertility and male partners with azoospermia due to epididymal obstruction. The surgical patency rate is approximately 50-60%.
