CITIC Xiangya Reproductive and Genetic Specialty Hospital was jointly established in 2002 by CITIC Group, Central South University, and Professor Lu Guangxiu's research team. It is the first specialized hospital in China to obtain approval from the former Ministry of Health to fully implement human assisted reproductive technology (including human sperm bank) and the first tertiary reproductive and genetic specialty hospital in China. It is a tertiary reproductive and genetic specialty hospital approved by the former health authorities with a qualified sperm bank and the ability to fully implement human assisted reproductive technology. It is the National Sperm Bank Technology Guidance Center, the National Human Sperm Bank Training Base, the winner of the first Hunan Innovation Award and the National Health and Family Planning System Advanced Collective Award.
For 20 years, under the leadership of Chief Scientist Professor Lu Guangxiu and President Professor Lin Ge, through institutional innovation and technological innovation, the hospital has embarked on a unique path of development in production, education, and research. In 2025, the hospital performed nearly 30,750 assisted reproductive cycles. As of January 13, 2026 more than 254,770 healthy babies have been born through assisted reproduction at the hospital. It has made positive contributions to family happiness and social harmony. In August 2017, the British journal Nature reported that the hospital's annual assisted reproductive treatment cycles were equivalent to 1/4 of the United States.
