Recently, the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank issued an appeal, stating that due to insufficient supply of high-quality sperm, they are soliciting "high-quality men" from the public to donate sperm. According to Zhu Wenbing, director of the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank, although sperm banks across the country generally face a situation of oversupply, the CITIC Xiangya Sperm Bank has a situation of "supply shortage" due to the fact that the "external supply" has always been greater than the donation amount.
It is understood that the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank is the only human sperm bank in Hunan Province. It not only provides sperm supply for assisted reproductive families in the province, but also supplies about 7,500 high-quality semen samples to more than 80 reproductive centers nationwide every year, helping countless families realize their dream of having children.
"The CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank is the National Sperm Bank Technical Guidance Center and the National Sperm Bank Technical Training Base. Whether it is the screening of sperm donors, or the preservation and use of semen, it has always strictly followed national standards, and its quality ranks among the top in the country, so it has always been favored by sperm banks in other provinces across the country." Zhu Wenbing introduced that the sperm donor screening of the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank needs to meet conditions such as "age 20-35 years old, height 170cm or above, and junior college or above education". These standards are generally higher than those in other parts of the country. With the increasing emphasis on reproductive health in society, the demand for high-quality sperm from assisted reproductive families is also increasing, which has made the high-quality semen of the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank a more popular "internet celebrity".
However, in recent years, the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank has gradually faced difficulties—the external supply of semen has continued to increase, while the number of sperm donors has been unstable. From this year's statistics, this trend is still continuing, so the donation and reserve of qualified sperm is "imminent".
To this end, the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank has issued an appeal: We urgently need more healthy men to join our ranks and work together to promote the continuation of life.
International Trend: Selecting the Perfect Man
Due to issues such as concepts, sperm donation is still a relatively sensitive issue in China. What is the situation like in developed countries? It is understood that in developed countries such as Europe and the United States, the social environment has a higher acceptance of sperm donation, and people have a more open attitude towards it. In some countries, there are even movies and TV series with this as their theme, such as the popular American movie "Selecting the Perfect Man".
In the United States, some places have already established large sperm banks, such as the sperm bank located in Atlanta. These institutions have strict protection measures for the identity and detailed information of donors. Donors can choose not to disclose their identity information at all, or they can conditionally disclose some information. In addition, there are laws to protect the privacy rights of donors.
The world's most famous sperm bank—the sperm bank in Denmark—has become the world's largest sperm exporter. Sperm donation has become very common in this country, and they have helped infertile families around the world realize their dream of having children.
Does sperm donation harm health? Not only does it not, but there are many benefits!
Zhu Wenbing, director of the CITIC Xiangya Human Sperm Bank, introduced that sperm donation is mainly done through masturbation. Moderate sperm donation does not harm the body, and regular ejaculation is beneficial to semen metabolism and body health. The semen donated by sperm donors is stored in the sperm bank. After quarantine and qualification, it can be provided to couples who are infertile due to male factors to realize their dream of having children. It also provides a selectable method of eugenics for couples who are closely related or whose male partner has a family history of genetic diseases. In addition, donating semen also provides convenient conditions for further research and treatment of diseases.
In addition, sperm donation includes free male reproductive health checkups, and donors can also receive subsidies for transportation and nutrition (300 yuan each time). Sperm donation is not a one-time thing. After each examination, strict screening is required. After passing, the next donation can be made until the final storage, which requires approximately 10 donations (additional subsidies are provided after all collections are completed).
To encourage college students and other groups to participate in sperm donation, CITIC Xiangya continues to provide volunteers who have completed the donation cycle with the opportunity to apply for free 5-year fertility preservation services. This service involves long-term cryopreservation of healthy sperm, effectively preserving male fertility for future reproductive needs, which is a "reproductive insurance" for eugenics, with a total value of approximately 18,000 yuan.
The CITIC Xiangya Reproductive and Genetic Specialty Hospital Human Sperm Bank was established in 1981. It is China's first human frozen sperm bank and the only human sperm bank in Hunan Province. It integrates medical treatment, teaching, and research, and is the National Sperm Bank Technical Guidance Center and the National Human Sperm Bank Technical Training Base. In more than 40 years since its establishment, it has recruited approximately 40,000 college students as sperm donors, with more than 9,000 qualified sperm donors, and has accumulated 388,000 frozen sperm samples.
